Ranger Nic Cooley & K9 Sego
Bureau of Land Management
K9 Sego is named for Sego Canyon — a stretch of land just north of Moab rich with prehistoric rock art, a preserved ghost town, and some of the most striking desert scenery in the West. Ranger Cooley, a Wisconsin native who moved out west in 2019 and never looked back, wanted his partner's name to feel rooted in the community they serve. Sego is a two-year-old German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois mix, predominantly black with tan legs and famously oversized paws, trained in suspect apprehension, handler protection, and narcotics detection. Together, Ranger Cooley and Sego have already made their mark — most notably at Burning Man, where Sego's alert on a single vehicle led to the recovery of two firearms and over 80 grams of crack cocaine.
Off duty, Sego is a different kind of force. He rolls in the grass the moment his gear comes off, refuses to fully commit to swimming no matter how hot it gets, and every single morning finds the nearest shoe, blanket, or door mat to grab and sprint away with before Ranger Cooley can get him loaded up. The training never stops — K9 work is a lifelong commitment — but so is the bond. Ranger Cooley will tell you that when he and Sego are truly in sync, everything just flows. Given that Sego has been stealing shoes since day one, it's clear he picked the right partner.
